Charity

The 2023 Houston Fiber Fest charity focus is related to a topic that touches the lives of many in the Texas area: breast health, education, and cancer awareness. In Texas, breast cancer has been the leading cancer type since 2016. This year, we will be highlighting two organizations that support quality breast health care and providing services to breast cancer survivors.

How you can help:

This year at Fiber Fest, we will be asking for donations of “Knitted Knockers” that will be provided free of charge to women in the Houston area that have experienced a mastectomy. For each pair you donate, you will receive one raffle ticket to enter to win an exclusive gift basket only for charity participants! See bullet points below for a few requirements for handmade items donated:

  • You must use the approved patterns and yarns listed on knittedknockers.org
    • Yes- there are both knitting and crochet patterns!
    • The yarn types for this are critical: Approved yarn types have been tested by actual mastectomy patients, and have been found to remain soft and gentle on the skin after repeated washings.
  • One donation is a pair (2) of knockers. In a ziploc bag, include the following:
    • A pair of unstuffed knockers
    • The skein label from the yarn used
    • Paper or index card with your first name and size knocker made

We cannot accept knockers that do not have their accompanied skein label.

All sizes are accepted! The pattern sizing is done by cup size: A, B, C, D, DD, etc.

All colors are also accepted! However, the most requested colors are the neutral tones of beige, tan and shades of brown.

As you work on your knocker, we ask that you keep it as clean as possible. When delivered, the organization will include care instructions as well as the name of the person who donated their time and love to make this gift possible. We hope you will join us this year in brightening the life of a woman who has experienced this life-changing experience.

Below is a short list of shops that sell approved yarns in the Houston area. We encourage you to go to your local yarn shop with the list of approved yarns to see which they carry.
